Things you might not know about Village Squares

2013

Welcome to new and old members. Our Club is the friendliest club at Ocean Hills. These are a few of our Basic Policies for students.

A. Our Village Squares Student Program consists of one (1) year of classes. All students are strongly urged to attend a second year to become more proficient with the calls. Students will be taught 135 Standard calls in a year’s time. Most students can attend Wednesday night club dances after one year, but for some it is recommended they wait until completing a second review year.

B. Student Classes are currently being taught Tuesdays from 3 to 5 PM by Jim Randall, our club caller,in Abravenal Hall. At each class Jim will review previous square dance steps he taught and introduce two or three new steps. Classes provide lots of practice and review.

1. It is understood that students may miss a few classes due to traveling or for other reasons, but since calls are all taught at least three times, that is not a problem. Also, Jim will always try to give extra attention to those who have missed. Additionally, there are other clubs in our area that also have classes to provide additional or review experience.

C. Verl Lobb: Additionally, Verl holds a FREE class every Thursday morning from 9 to 10 AM to review the latest steps that Jim Randall taught the previous Tuesday. And again, students are highly encouraged to attend these to gain proficiency.

D. Partners: All new students will learn with Angels*. Square Dancing is a couple’s dance and we encourage members to join with partners. We cannot always accommodate a disproportionate number of singles. We do, however, offer an opportunity for females to learn the men’s parts, to help the balance.

E. *Angels: Angels are Club members who have at least one year as a student and at least one more year as either a second year student or student partner. Angels dance with each new student at both the Tuesday and Thursday classes. Angels provide to students their experience and help. Angels are also able to sharpen their own dancing skills while helping new students.
