Modern square dancing is one of the most social activities available at OHCC. Village Squares began here at OHCC in 1984 with Murray and Ida Rose as the first presidents. Frequently referred to as "friendship set to music," square dancing is a lot of fun, combining physical and mental exercise. The square dance is choreographed spontaneously by the "caller" who combines standard movements to music. There are well over one hundred movements to be learned at our dance

level, Mainstream-Plus, and each dance is unique.

We dance to all types of music including pop, swing, jazz and rock. Country Western is included, but is not dominant. Plus level dances are held each Wednesday in the Abravanel Hall from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Beginning classes are held in Abravanel Hall each Tuesday afternoon from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. There is an open enrollment period during January each year.

The class is a year in duration, with graduation at the end of the year. Long before graduation you can enjoy dances that are keyed to the class’s level of proficiency. Several other clubs in North County offer make-up classes, useful for missed classes due to travel or other reasons.

Square dancing is international! Once you have learned to square dance, you can enjoy the activity almost anywhere in the world. The movements are standardized worldwide, and the calls are always in English. All square dance clubs welcome visitors at their dances.

Square dance conventions and cruises are held all over the United States providing opportunities to travel and meet other people for those wishing to do so.
